Sabrina Carpenter Considers Banning Phones at Her Concerts

Pop star Sabrina Carpenter has revealed that she’s seriously considering banning cell phones at her live shows. In a recent conversation with Rolling Stone, Carpenter shared some behind-the-scenes thoughts that didn’t make it into her cover story — including her openness to asking fans to put their phones away during concerts.

“This will probably p— off my fans, but absolutely,” Carpenter said. Her inspiration came after attending a Las Vegas show by Silk Sonic, where audience members were required to lock up their phones. “It was the best concert experience I’ve ever had,” she explained. “I truly felt like I was back in the ’70s — I wasn’t alive then, but that’s how it felt. Everyone was singing, dancing, looking at each other, laughing. It was genuinely beautiful.”

Growing up in the age of smartphones, Carpenter acknowledges that phones at concerts have become the norm. “I don’t blame people for wanting to capture memories,” she admitted. “But depending on how long I keep touring, and how old I am… girl, take those phones away! You cannot zoom in on my face. Right now my skin is soft and supple — it’s fine. Don’t zoom in on me when I’m 80 years old up there.”

The debate over phones at concerts isn’t new. Artists like Jack White, Tool, and A Perfect Circle have long voiced concerns over mobile use during performances. Some acts have even gone as far as ejecting fans who defy no-phone rules, or utilizing Yondr pouches to lock devices away.

Even Iron Maiden’s manager Rod Smallwood recently issued a plea during the band’s Run for Your Lives tour, asking fans to enjoy the show without their screens. “Looking out and seeing rows of phones is disheartening for the band — and distracting for other fans too,” he said.

The question remains: should we capture the moment, or simply live in it? Sabrina Carpenter seems ready to choose the latter.
